When you think of action cameras, the first name that leaps to mind is almost certainly GoPro. But as awesome as GoPros are they do come with a bit of a hefty price tag.

Fortunately, in the last couple of years there have been some excellent alternative action cameras enter the market, which won’t break the bank. Here are our 5 favourite GoPro alternatives; all high spec, feature rich and available to buy online in the UK for under £150.

Sony HDR AS50 Waterproof Action Cam

The first camera on our list of GoPro alternatives is the HDR AS50 from Sony. The AS50 shoots in full HD 1080p at up to 60fps and is also capable of shooting at up to 240fps at lower resolutions (480p). With built in Wifi and a jack socket for plugging in an external microphone, the Sony HDR AS50 is a great all round entry level action cam.

Polaroid XS100 Extreme Edition HD

The Polaroid XS100 Extreme Edition is another cheaper GoPro alternative which shoots in up to full 1080p resolution at 30fps. The camera performs very well in low light and is waterproof up to 10m. Stills can be shot in up to 16MP with burst and time lapse functionality available and the wide angle lens provides 170 degrees of coverage.

Polaroid Cube HD 1080p Lifestyle Action Video Camera

This tiny action camera stands at just 35mm, but manages to squeeze in full HD 1080p recording, a wide angle (124 degree) lens, and a built in battery that can record for up to 90 minutes. The Polaroid Cube supports Micro SD cards up to 32GB (not included) and includes a mounting magnet that sticks to any metal surface. It’s weatherproof/splashproof, but not fully water resistant – so a light rain shower will be fine, but probably not the best action camera to hop into a kayak with.

HTC RE Action Camera

There’s no two ways about it, the HTC RE is an odd looking camera, but if you can get past the cosmetics, then you can grab yourself a good quality action cam for a great price. With 1080p full HD video, a 16MP camera and time-lapse recording, the specs hold up against more expensive action cameras. The HTC RE is also waterproof without a case to depths of up to 1m. Pop on a waterproof cap and you can take it down to 30 metres below the waves – perfect for scuba diving.

ThiEYE i30 Full HD 1080P Action Camera

The final camera on our list of GoPro alternatives is one that, well… pretty much looks exactly like a GoPro! The ThiEYE i30 shoots in full HD 1080p at 30fps, or 720p at 60fps. When it comes to stills, it technically has better specs than the entry level GoPro HERO and can capture photos at up to 12MP (with 10fps burst mode available). With built in WI-FI, included waterproof housing (waterproof to depths up to 40m) and weighing just 58g the ThiEYE i30 is arguably the best value camera on this list.
