Our Review of the Sony HDR AS20

The Sony HDR AS20 is one of the newest names in the sports camera market, but that doesn’t mean it’s a slouch.

It’s a good option for people that are out in nature, hiking, biking, exploring, or adventuring. You can take it out for a hike with some of your equipment and you won’t have to worry about it weighing you down.

Plus it comes with a lot of great features that make it better for using on the go.

That being said, does it have everything it needs to really take the cake when it comes to action cams?

We’ll figure that out in this review.

Sony HDR AS20 action camera specs

This incredibly light camera is specially built to be durable, and with a waterproof case (which is supplied with the unit) you can take it anywhere. It gives you the option of recording POV footage without all the weight (but you can get a head mounted camera if you want to mount it on your head).

Sony has packed a lot of features in this boxy, round-edged camera and forward facing microphones.

You can see a small LCD screen and easy-to-operate button system to let you easily operate your camera on the go, or plug your device in with HDMI ports, USB ports and 3.5 mm microphone input and expansion connectors.

The battery is completely hidden underneath the camera, along with slots for memory additions.

The buttons are easy to operate, even if you mounted it on top of your head. If you’re worried about accidentally pressing it, you can even depress the hold switch to prevent it from accidentally filming or stopping filming.

Some other features on the Sony HDR AS20 include:

  • A high-clarity 16.8 MP Exmor R CMOS sensor lens.
  • Ultra-wide ZEISS Tessar lens (170) to increase ISO resolution.
  • Shoots images at 120 frames per second
  • Easy to share and control photos over WiFi or Bluetooth.
  • Automatically reduces blur with SteadyShot image stabilization.

Some users of the POV unit with a case say that the camera isn’t incredibly cumbersome or heavy, but it is big. This means you have to use it right-side up, or completely upside down to use the front of the camera.

Another great aspect of the Sony HDR AS20 is that it comes with lots of accessories (that actually fit in the case)

Unlike the GoPro or other ION or MUVI cameras, the accessories that come along with the Sony HDRAS20 actually fit back in the case, with or without the camera.

The only accessories that you have to wrangle with are the batteries, the adhesive mounts, and handlebar or headband mounts (if that kind of stuff is your style).

In review, is the Sony HDR AS20 worth the money?

One of the biggest perks of the Sony HDRAS20 Action Camera is that it’s so user friendly.

Even if you’re riding down a mountain on a bike, or climbing a rock wall, you could still push the record button on your device, and you’ll feel comfortable that you’re hitting the right buttons.

It operates at different resolutions on the fly (between 1080p, 720p, or 480p) with wide angle shots that look great even at bizarre perspectives in low light situations.

As you’d expect, Sony is the new king of speed shots, giving you color richness and frame rate details without any spotty or jagged lines.

The battery and the software?

You might not think that 1,240 mAh capacity is enough battery power; but the camera is surprisingly low-draw.

You can expect to get a full day’s use out of a charge; but if you’re doing heavy duty filming it’s always best to carry a few spares.

Another reason that it’s so successful is because you can shoot it quickly with or without a viewfinder, transporting video feed and pictures through WiFi alone.
